Lotus Let Us Down

So, my sister gave me a Moby wrap at Christmastime in preparation for Mikayla coming. She had been using it with her daughter, Aspen, and fell in love with it. Since I have some chronic back pain, it was a very thoughtful thing for her to do!

If you’re unfamiliar with the Moby wrap, basically it’s a long piece of fabric you fold in half and then spin round your body like you’re decorating a May pole. After swathing yourself in fabric you strategically tuck your baby inside the wraps and magically your little one settles in, you have your hands free (though you look a bit like the Hunchback of Notre Dame), and you’re able to carry your bundle with little to no back strain. It’s a fabulous concept!



When we got the wrap several months ago we didn’t have instructions and so we just played with it to see how it would work. We threw Maggie and Mia in it and got several good laughs out of the whole adventure, but absolutely no confidence that we would actually be able to work the thing with a baby inside.



As you can see from the pictures, the first attempts were laughable rather than secure.

After a tutorial from my sister at Christmas I felt much more confident that we could use this wrap like pros.

Mikayla arrived and I started using the wrap. We had a few successful trips out (Mikayla relaxed so much that she immediately filled her diaper when I put her in the wrap!) and I realized that Isaiah needed his own wrap.

When our eBay wrap arrived yesterday we were pretty excited. We grabbed both Mia and Maggie and had them help us get Isaiah acclimated to the whole Moby wrap thing. We got pretty good at it!


The wonderful thing about Maggie is that she can actually talk now and tell us what’s going on! So we tried several different ways to wrap her up to test out what might work for Mikayla (and Maggie or Mia – the thing can carry up to 35 lbs!). Maggie got more and more confident as we tried it out.

“Dos comfoble!” Maggie said repeatedly. Each time we tried something new she got more excited and kept telling us that it was comfortable.

She was consumed by a fit of giggles and we all laughed along with her.

Then we got a little daring and tried for the lotus hold.



We knew it would be potentially difficult because the picture showed a baby rather than a toddler in the wrap but everything else had been so successful we just went for it.

Oops.



All was fine as long as Maggie was dangling from the wrap by her groin. It was when we pulled the little “seat belt” over her legs that her face changed from excited and happy to concerned.

Her concern deepened and a wrinkle formed on her face.

“Dis... Not comfoble,” she said softly. The contrast was so funny from her previous excitement and the poor little thing was crunched up like a pretzel. We found it very funny and moved her right away.



All in all, even though we’ll avoid the Lotus hold for kids who are longer than about two feet, I’d recommend the Moby to anyone who is going to be carrying a little one around for awhile!
